Roughly, 62% of high school seniors have had sexual intercourse. Could this have of been prevented if schools taught sexual education? Some think that sexual education is something that should be taught at home by parents for religious and personal reasons. Sexual education should be a part of the basic instruction in high schools. Teaching this generation the facts about safe sex and sexual education will lower the rate of teen pregnancy and keep teens safe greatly, as well teach them the physical facts and decimate the flawed myths.
If students were taught sexual education teen pregnancy would be lowered. 41% of high school students who are sexually active don’t use condoms. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) if teens were taught sexual education in schools they would learn that condoms are effective 98% of the time in protecting pregnancy. Not only would teen pregnancy be lowered, but the STD rate would be minimized as well. Roughly 51% of teen girls and 49% of teen boys that are sexually active have tested positive for new infections. (DoSomething.org) The U.S. has the highest rate of STD infection in the industrialized world, once again because this is not a part of the curriculum. Unfortunately most STD's are contracted in younger generations due to being undereducated in the topic. People between 15 and 24 years of age account for 50% of all new STD's and infections. (DoSomething.org) This large number of infected young adults and teens could be lowered if they were simply taught ways to prevent this and was to protect themselves, as simple as using a condom. We are doing this generation a disservice that is affecting their health and their entire lives by simply not teaching our students about Sexual Education.
