Should college athletes be paid so much to do something they are so passionate? It has become one of the largest debated topics amongst college athletics. All sports programs bring in an extremely large sum of money for these college teams. An immense amount of these athletes receive free tuition, books, tutoring, room and board, transportation, and medical care. Student athletes should not be paid for the athletic events that they participate in. College sports provide hundreds of thousands of student athletes the opportunity to play the sports they love while getting the education and skills they need to succeed after college. Paying students to play would make them think they are employees, taking their focus away from academics. According to Bob Williams,”Of the more than 480,000 NCAA student athletes playing today, fewer than 2 percent will become professional athletes”(23). With these opportunities, many college football players would have a better chance in a career in professional football. Which considers college football as a,”form of self-investment in a potential future pro career, which is arguably its own form of compensation and a valuable one at that”(7).
Some may say paying student athletes teaches them to work hard and try their best. However, it will only teach them that money is the only thing that matters in the world. They will start to think that their athletic program is the only thing to focus on, and should disregard school work. With that mindset, they will completely fail their courses and not have any job to fall back on if anything had happened to them.
