I totally agree with that Herbert is saying in this article. The way school systems are today is disgusting. They are not pushing kids to do their best work. Being a senior in high school and going to college right after was a huge change. High school does not get you prepared for college. They baby you and the teachers don 't really care about teaching. In his article he talks about the teachers having tenure and how you can tell they have it. I agree with him because when I was in high school most of my teachers had tenure and they would always make comments saying, “I don’t really care if you learn the material I have tenure.” Or they think they can say insulting things to students because of it. Another thing is some teachers really don’t love what they 're doing. They 're just there to collect their paycheck and leave. You hear all the time about teachers who just give busy work and don’t take the time to actually teach. Now being in college though I can see a huge difference in the teaching of the teachers. They actually care about what they 're teaching you and are willing to help you if you need it. Herbert talks about doing an assessment of the teachers on-the-job performance and weeding out the bad ones. This is a great idea because they 're hundreds of people who have degrees in teaching that need jobs and are probably way more excited about teaching. He gives an example of a charter school that increased their school days and placed a higher demand on its teachers and students. Apparently they saw improvements in their teachers and students.
