Why We Shouldn’t Have Year-Round School In modern day society, we go to school from September to June and then we have the summer off from school, but President Obama presented an idea to attend school for the whole year instead of 10 months. This at first look may seem like a good idea because getting a longer education should result in children having better grades, but there are many things that outweigh that and make it a bad idea. We often see the pros before the cons but even after looking at the pros a year-round school year isn’t a good idea. Therefore, because of all the cons we should not have a year-round school year added to our school system.
Traditional school versus Year round school The idea of year round school is starting to be more the topic of discussion. Many people are for the idea of year round education and many are against it. “If our country began on a year around schedule, it would have seemed bizarre to propose the summer- off schedule as a superior way to educate students” says Principle Hazel Colebank. Although some may feel year round school is great for bettering education, changing what’s considered normal could cause more harm than good.
“Sleep is that golden chain that ties health and our bodies together,” (Thomas Dekker), but with most middle and high schools starting before 8:00 am, students aren’t getting the recommended hours of sleep they need to do well in school. School start times should be later for middle and high schoolers for the protection of students’ academic scores, the reduced risk of traffic accidents, and for the protection of student health, although people may argue that parent work schedules may have to change and that the bus schedule change may or will be costly. Middle and high schools should start later for the positive impacts they would have on students and their families. First of all, the start times of middle and high schools should be later for the protection of students’ academic scores. Students who don’t get enough sleep get lower academic and standardized test scores.
When considering the choice of whether, schools should convert to year round schooling or not, the choice should definitely be schools should not convert to year round schooling. A few reasons schools should not convert to year round schooling is because students can even forget something they learned, in a short period of time, and then the teachers would have to reteach the same topic, which is extremely frustrating. The students would also spend less time with their family, because they don’t have the traditional summer break. Not only that, but it causes parents more stress to have to plan ahead of time for how they were going to take care of their children whenever they had breaks (which were very frequent). If this claim is not listened to, teachers teach the same thing repeatedly, family bonds weaken, it disrupts parents work, and it risks the child’s safety.
Plus it ruins summer. Most schools go 180 days a year with breaks in between then you get out and can enjoy your summer June through July. With year round schools you still go the traditional 180 days, of course with breaks in between, but you have to go to school in the summer so all you get off in the summer is June. There are a lot of reasons why you shouldn’t go to a year round school, here are a few.
Some people may argue that any break over 2 weeks may cause the kids to lose knowledge therefore there would be summer school So Students do need more than 2 - 4 weeks disengage. Another reason why school should not go year round is that people have different opportunities in the summer. One of the reasons is that students may want to have summer jobs. For example if a high school student atented year round school and wanted to be a lifeguard he would not be able to.
By Kayla Cherry My opinion on year round school is that it is unnecessary because why would teachers need to teach all this information within only one or two months. When the kids get too overwhelmed? “Study Finds” says that students from year round school have about the same grades as the people that don't go to year round schools. So i think that if they get the same grades anyways and if they learn the same, than why do we even need it? I feel like student should have summer break, it's the time when you can explore, it's the time you find more friends and interests, it even the time when you can just be active.
yes we should have all year round school According to this website http://blogs.edweek.org The traditional school year, with roughly three months of vacation days every summer, was first implemented to accomodate contemporaryeconomic, like children needing ''down time'' to decompress and ''be kids,'' but was born out of econmic necessity. It was much later, however, that the idea as a whole gained momentum.
Students can experience more socialization than they do in the summertime. Year-round schooling has more advantages than just regular public schooling. By starting year-round schools across the country we will be able to make education in America worth it by providing With year-round schools it will bring better education to the students that are taking classes at that school. To conclude, the benefits and drawbacks of year-round schooling are about equal.
In an article about how each school system works called, “Pros and Cons of Year-Round School,” explains that “In a year-round school instead if having one long summer break, students attend school for a set amount of time and then have a shorter break before returning to school,”(Morin, 2022). That shows how year-round schools allow for more flexibility in schedules which can lead to more experiences and it could also lead to not having as many busy times during the year in which normal school take place. An example of this is stated in the article “Pros and Cons of Year-Round School.” Morin writes that, “In a year-round school families can Split vacation time more evenly throughout the year, making it easier for families to plan their vacations without missing school time or being restricted to only taking vacations during the summer. ”(Morin, 2022).
We can see from the research shown of the many aspects of having school year-round. First, students gain and use more learning retention that helps them succeed more in school. Next, students' test scores have improved significantly with having school all year-round because they are understanding more of what they are being taught in school. It gives them more time to ask questions and truly know what they are being taught. Last, the students and teachers get more breaks and longer breaks with being in school all year-round.
I believe year round schooling is essential to the way students learn and focus throughout the school year. It will not only be beneficial to students but also teachers and staff having breaks throughout the year. Year round schooling relieves stress not only from kids but also parents, teachers and staff. “WE have had a lot of positive response because of
Year-round school is not a favorable idea because of the excess of breaks during the school year. Care.com says that “ The superfluous amount of break during the school year of year-round school is not a great idea. This is because teachers will have to review after every break, making the curriculum slower, and making students’ learning slower.” The amount of breaks during year-round school is unacceptable. Having a break in between the end and start of the school year is a much more grand idea.
