Friar Laurence and the Nurse serve as complements to one another in Romeo and Juliet. The Nurse and Friar Laurence are both aides to their respective mentees. Friar Laurence is a magical or supernatural aide with knowledge of herbs and medicines while the Nurse is a Capulet servant who helps lighten the mood of a tragic situation. While the Nurse is inappropriate and makes sexual comments, Friar is very serious and reserved. He does not usually make any jokes. Regarding Romeo and Juliet’s marriage, Friar believes it will end the family feud and the Nurse wants Juliet to marry Paris and to respect her family’s wishes after Romeo gets banished. They both act like surrogate parents for their mentees and they give advice to their mentees. Since Romeo and Juliet cannot speak to their actual parents about their marriage, they both tell their mentors about their love for each other. Friar Laurence gives advice to Romeo and Juliet throughout the play. He believes their love will end the family feud that has lasted for many years. The Nurse is Juliet's mentor. She has Juliet's interests at heart. She wants what is best for Juliet. However, when Romeo is banished she quickly urges Juliet to marry Paris. Both the Nurse and Friar Laurence want whatever is best for their mentees and want to see Romeo and Juliet happy, no matter what circumstances. I also believe that there should be no punishment in this case. In this scene, it is a hot afternoon in a public area. Benvolio tries to convince Mercutio to leave because he has a foreboding feeling that a brawl is about to take place. Mercutio teases Benvolio about being hot tempered which he really isn't. Tybalt then enters the scene looking for Romeo. Tybalt and Mercutio have a little banter before Romeo enters the scene. While Tybalt wants to fight Romeo, Romeo does not want to fight him because they are now cousins by marriage. Mercutio gets mad and furious because of all the insults Tybalt is saying. Mercutio and Tybalt fight and Romeo gets in the way, trying to stop the fight. Tybalt goes under his arm and stabs Mercutio. Tybalt runs away and Romeo mourns for his friend. Tybalt re-enters the scene and Romeo is filled with anger that he kills Tybalt without thinking which is his tragic flaw. Based on this scene, I believe it is everyone's fault for Mercutio's death. It's Romeo's fault because he got in the way of Tybalt and Mercutio fighting which gave Tybalt the opportunity to stab Mercutio. If he didn't, Mercutio may still be alive. It's Mercutio's fault because he started the fight between Tybalt and himself. He could've gone home with Benvolio, but he didn't. He let his temper control him.
