A dystopia is a society that is almost completely opposite from our modern day society. Dystopias are societies that are undesirable or even frightening. However, our modern society can be frightening sometimes but not to a dystopias extreme. Our modern society and the society in the novel The Giver have many differences, but very few similarities The rules in our society are less stressed then the rules in dystopias. To keep the population the same they kept family units the same. In the novel The Giver it states “Two children-one male, one female-to each family unit” (Lowry 8). In Jonas’ society they are only allowed to have a certain amount of kids and a certain gender. In our society your aloud to have as many kids as you want. In both societies there is still a limit on kids because if the house is not big enough for all your kids then you would have to move out rather than just not having that many. To keep from arguments and feelings they assigned you a spouse. In the novel The Giver it states “ sometimes an adult who applied to receive a spouse waited months or even years before a match was approved and announced” (Lowry 48). Spouses have to be matched to their personality to ensure no feelings or fights happen between them. As the Giver was giving Jonas memories he gave him a birthday which made him feel. The Giver states “ so now he understood the joy of being an individual, special and unique and proud”(Lowry 121). From that memory he got to feel something he's never felt before. The Giver also states “ He had not taken the pills for four weeks now. But he knew he couldn't go back to the world of no feelings that he had lived in so long” (Lowry 130-131). The pills stop him from feeling and once he starts to feel and he realizes how special feeling really is. In Modern day communities you are allowed to to feel however you want to feel.
