Kendrick Lamar Duckworth was born in Compton on June 17, 1987. Gang activity had a high presence around Kendrick. He was one of the few that didn’t become influenced by it. He instead was motivated by it. He was a very good student and writer. He started writing stories, then poems, then lyrics. He began performing at a young age with the name K-Dot. When he was 16 he made a mixtape called Youngest Head N***a In Charge. This lead him to his first record deal with Top Dawg Entertainment. He started working with different West Coast artists like Jay Rock, featured on money trees, and Schoolboy Q, featured on Maad City. In 2010, Lamar dropped K-Dot and started using his real name. He was signed to Dr. Dre after being taken under his wing and becoming his mentor. Kendrick’s highly anticipated album good kid, Maad City came out shortly after in 2012, which was his second studio album. Kendrick is one is the few from Compton that used his struggles to get himself out of the hood. In “Sing About Me I’m Dying of Thirst”, the first verse is about when one of Kendrick’s friend’s brother, Dave, dies in a drive by. Dave is an example of one of the many people who “sank” in Compton. He got stuck in the game because of what he saw around him. In the first part of “Maad City”, Kendrick reminisces on things that happened while he lived in Compton. He talks about how his mom had to tell him to duck while he was eating lunch because of the gunshots. He also talks about seeing people die and get shot.
