The Importance of Sleep
She rolled over and rubbed her foggy eyes several times. Feeling like she could sleep for the rest of her life, her mom yells, “Hurry up and get out of bed! You have school today!” Groaning loudly she slid off the bed and stumbled to get up, still tired from practice and her never ending pile of homework from the previous night. Today more than 90% of teenagers live with chronic sleep deprivation. This means that most teens get an average of 6 hours or less, when they should be getting at least 9 or 10 hours every single night. First, we need to discuss different ways to tell if someone is in need of sleep, a few ways would be, simply feeling fatigue, feelings of moodiness, duifficulty waking up, or the inability to concentrate. One way to obtain more sleep is a consistent bedtime. Waking up and going to bed around the same time everyday can drastically increase how you feel (even on weekends if possible). Another idea to help increase hours of sleep is to exercise regularly, but also about three hours before bed. The reason behind this is, exercising gets you pumped up and ready to go and if you are worked up before bed, then you will have a harder time falling asleep. Furthermore, school times can help as well, “In one study in which an intervention pushed start times later, it wasn’t just academic outcomes that improved; car crashes went down by as much as seventy percent, and self-reported depression rates fell.” (Konnikova 1) To sum it up, these examples will help many feel as though they are not always on a constant jet lag, but as if they are refreshed. Performance levels will increase dramatically in addition to these few possible
