Social contracts in America have been molded around public policy through the years. Public policy is influenced by the citizens of America and the countries stability. Social contracts like the Affordable Care Act (ACA) conveys a political message that the government is establishing a social contract with the citizens of America. Again, when I was that age I wanted to be treated like an adult and having input about what is on the contract would make me feel like I had ownership of the class. It was not just another teacher telling me what to do, but I helped make the rules and the consequences that followed if they were not followed. Additionally, then being taught what each term of the contract ment would help to lay a foundation that could actually be followed. Having an operational definition to words that we hear everyday (i.e. respect, fair, responsibility) helps the students have a better opportunity to follow the contract because they understand what is expected. Everyone knows once a person hit 18 and graduate high school, the next step is applying for university. What if there was another option? An individual may have passed it driving to work, walking to the store or even browsing the internet. What is it? The local Community College!

The United States alone has around 320 million people and world is more like 7 billion. In order to maintain structure and social contract, we need government of some form. Countries around the world have different government structures but it all comes down to some form of a system that maintains order. We all knew the rules at the beginning of the course and signed a contract saying we would abide by them, so there was no arguing with the consequences. Most of the rules that were placed could lead to the student getting kicked out of the class and stop them from receiving their certificate. We also knew the payoff for abiding by the rules which was to receive our certification as a Medical Assistant, something that people pay thousands of dollars for schooling and we were going to get it for free. The social contract is a system that takes away specific individual rights in order to operate an ordered system and is established in the United States political system through the laws and rights they have set to run an equal democratic system. The social contract was built in the primeval ages with people who were born into the state of nature without any structural systems within society. Everyone's moral and political obligations are depended on contract, that states how each persons rights are permitted by the law of order. If there was no common sense of how people should live, then there would be anarchy. A world without rule.
Many of their principles align with my teaching philosophy as well as my classroom management preferences. For example, on the very first day of school, my students and I will work together to develop a behavior contract that will contain the rules/norms of our classroom. We will brainstorm ideas together on an anchor chart, and then I will consolidate these responses into cohesive phrases. Once the “published” copy of the behavior contract has been presented to the students, and no changes need to be made, each student will sign the contract, indicating that they plan to abide by these rules every day, and if they make a poor choice, they accept the consequences that are to follow. The consequences for the broken rules/norms will also be discussed as a class.
