Social Effects of Legalizing Marijuana. Today more states continue to pass laws that legalize marijuana. For a long time, marijuana has been illegal in the United States. However, some states have legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes while others have legalized it for economic purposes. Despite marijuana legalization in some states, there exists a heated policy debate on whether to legalize it universally. According to ACLU report, marijuana arrests account for more than half of all drug related apprehensions. The number of individuals arrested for marijuana related cases continue to increase on a daily basis. Due to this, some people have considered legalizing marijuana since the number of arrested criminals would decrease. However, it is critical to consider the social effects of legalizing marijuana. A study on the association between marijuana use and depression indicated that cannabis use lead to anxiety (Lev-Ran et al.2014).Further, the research indicated that the anxiety resulted to depression. A study on marijuana legalization and cognitive effects showed that marijuana use led to depression ( Wihbey, 2013).As such, one becomes hostile to others .A research on cannabis suicidal ideation indicated that depression was the first symptom of heavy marijuana intake (Van Ours et al.2013). Due to this hostility, many families have broken up leading many children to suffer. Business and other economic activities can thrive when the society is calm. Therefore, legalization of marijuana can disturb the peace of the society. A research published by journal of addictive behavior indicated that marijuana caused social anxiety which resulted to depression (Buckner et al.2012).Legalizing marijuana has a profound effect on the social wellbeing of an individual since it leads to aggression and poor family
