Social media is affecting adolescent relationships in a intensely pessimistic. The world has seen an increase in adolescent suicide caused by cyberbullying in recent years. Departments for mental health have also seen an increase in social anxiety, depression, and many other mental disabilities that have been caused by involvement in social media. Social media has also increased stress to conform to a social normality in the eye of the public. In its entirety the effects of social media on adolescent has caused problems within the most recent generations that we must be able to address and fix. When cellphones and computers were less accessible, children who were being bullied would only have to deal with the torment at school; but now that everyone has an electronic device at their fingertips, it seems that there is no escape from the horrors of adolescent bullying. In a study done by the i-SAFE foundation, they have discovered that twenty-five percent of adolescents have reported being bullied through their cellular devices. The work that is being done on trying to fix the issues of cyberbullying is at large, but it is discovered that it is much harder to catch someone while they are under a mask of cyber identity. Though there are ways to find the perpetrator, it is also quite impossible to do so when the victim never speaks up about their problems. One out of ten teens inform an adult about their issues with cyberbullying, which has kept it in the dark so it may not be resolved. These issues have been caused by constant torment through social media, and possibly mixed with torment in the real world. The Cyberbullying Research Center concluded that adolescents that are cyberbullied are more likely to have low self esteem, which in turn makes them more likely to contemplate suicide. Eighty-three percent of cyberbullying victims reported that it brought down their self esteem, something that has brought our children anxiety, depression, and extreme self hate that cannot be shaken because of the impending doom that is going to school or getting online. Because of online bullying, ten percent of cyberbully victims have made attempts to take their own lives. This is a major concern for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, as they have gotten a five percent increase in calls from adolescents who have been cyberbullied into contemplating suicide. Thirty percent of cyberbullying victims have had suicidal thoughts, and that is something to have concern about. The thought of never being able to know that your child is feeling that way- as I said before in my last paragraph - because they are too afraid to go to an adult for help, is absolutely sickening. Children also feel that the bullying is their fault, from how they dress, their sexual orientation, their choices. Adolescents have decided that the blame should be on them which has also brought along self esteem issues
