Although there are many issues facing youth today, there are three that especially stand out to me: gender inequality, the growing role of social media, and the body image/sexual treatment of females. Although all three issues face youth, body image/sexual treatment and gender inequality especially impacts young women. I believe it difficult to consider our world ‘modern’ when women are facing injustices such as differing wages between the sexes and the under-representation of women in government. Although these two injustices impact older women, it is crucial to know that gender inequality does not begin once a woman enters the workplace, but instead, as soon as they have found their ‘identity’ in a society. Social media is becoming increasingly important in our daily lives; approximately 1.95 billion people use it regularly, and that number is increasing. However, one item that is not, is the knowledge and responsibilities of operating a social media account. Speaking from a youth perspective and using social media myself, I am able to see how it affects others my age. Although at first, social media may just seem like an enjoyable way to express yourself, many people are uninformed about the dangers and caution an individual should have when using the networking site. One thing especially, that I believe many of peers do not understand, is that their social media presence will follow them. In this increasingly digital world, it has become standard for possible employers, educational organizations, and organizations to examine an individual’s presence online. I believe that through an increased awareness of this issue, youth will grasp a stronger understanding of social media, and what it truly means to be a ‘digital citizen.’ Finally, my last issue is the issue of body image and sexual treatment of women.
