Social media has a huge impact on our society today. We live, breath and sleep social media. Things posted on the internet can be read by millions a day and reach everyone from around the world. Things are often exaggerated and misinformation is spread. Psychology Professor Roxane Cohen Silver states, ‘There’s rapid dissemination of information on social media that’s not being filtered by anybody. This provides the unfortunate opportunity for rumors to be transmitted very quickly, without any ability to evaluate the veracity.’ Not everything we read on social media is true but not many take the time to find out if what I being said is accurate or not. In Richard Perez-Pina, Jack Healy and Jennifer Medina’s article “Shooting Scares Shows a Nation Quick to Fear the Worst” from the August 29th 2016 New York Times, they use Pathos and Logos successfully throughout the text to explain why American’s frantic in time of fear. …show more content…

It lives in us, injected by the social media of a mainstream society. The authors explains how, despite the rarity of terrorist attacks or shootings, everyone lives in constant fear because of situations exploited on social media. This article contains an interview with Daniel Antonius as he speaks from a psychologist's point of view, “This overexposure can cause increased fear, anxiety and helplessness” He described “a ‘national anxiety’ about mass attacks that did not reflect the real level of danger.” In this quote Daniel describes the effects of overexposure to dangers that seem recurring but in reality are rare and the way it seems to latch on to our brain affecting our thinking and actions. The authors appeal to the pathos side of the article’s epidemic was successfully showed through Daniel’s interview as he showed our level of obliviance to the non-threatening danger of mass
