Ever since I was allowed to date, I was taught that the man is supposed to pay for the dinner bill. The man paying the bill rule is definitely supposed to be obeyed when you are dating. The man is also supposed to open all doors and pull out the lady’s chair. Let all alone, the man is supposed to pick the lady up and drive to the date . Therefore, I decided to violate the norm of paying the bill on a date.
Finally, in this novel there are certain themes that are seen such as power, social norms and education. These themes in the novel connects the liberal arts because with each theme it shows the humanity within people and multiple perspectives on the themes. After reading this novel I found it made me reflect on the power gained from education because I believe that knowledge is power. The social norm I decided to violate is to be nice to my sister. Most of the time we just argue or we will not even talk to each other because we are so busy doing our own thing. This norm acts as a mechanism for social control because most people think that siblings never get along and that if you can not control how the siblings act towards one another people just assume they do not get along. I had done a few things that day to be kind to my sister like fix a game on the computer for her and buy her dinner. For people that would not know us as siblings they would not think anything of it, but for instance for someone that knows us like our mom she would know something was up.

The social norm I violated was that of perseverance. Minorities are at many times perceived to be people who give up and settle for less. However, when we reach the common goal of attending a four-year university, the pressure to succeed is inevitable. Being able to attend such a prestigious university and not have the burden of paying for your education puts a tremendous amount of weight on ones shoulders. Society encourages women to have healthier behavior and show help seeking behaviors. (Ogden, 2017) I sometimes feel obligated to make doctors’ appointments because many women around me do so when they show the slightest symptom that might suggest an illness.
