Like President Ronald Reagan, I have always felt the desire to make a difference. However, I spent most of my life ignoring this calling out of selfishness. I always made the excuse that I was too young or it was too much work. I occasionally thought about becoming a social worker in the future, but ultimately decided that I wanted to find a career that would bring me more money and more success. In the summer after the pandemic, I found myself with no plans, so I decided to spend my summer volunteering at my local summer camp. I had dreams of being a counselor, but as a first-year volunteer, I was placed in the kitchen. I started the summer wishing I would have found a job that I could be paid for, but I found to enjoy working for the good of others and the camp more. This summer was one that I will always cherish and hope to continue volunteering in the future. As I started my senior year of high school, I wanted to take my passion into my school life. In my school’s student council, I spent my time planning the homecoming and courtwarming activities each year, but this didn’t seem as important to me anymore. I felt that I wanted to do more in my high school career than plan the perfect dance. I had been a student council for the entirety of high school, but I had not gained the courage to step up to a leadership position. After four years, I decided to take a step of courage by running to be the head of the service committee in this organization. I was elected and thrilled to pursue this leadership position. My main task was to plan my high school’s annual service day. On this day, students volunteer in many ways throughout the community such as picking up trash or packaging food at the food bank. I contacted local businesses, created sign-up sheets, and made flyers for this
