After completing the Inventory of Foundation Competencies in Social Work (Macgowan, 2012) I identified two knowledge-based skills and two skills based skills where I scored not as confident as other areas. (Questions 60-66 inclusive were done in pencil and I missed that they didn’t show up when scanned. 60-65 should be circled as 3 and 66 is circled as 2). I practiced and observed these four skills, as well as other skills while participating in the role plays as a participant, a facilitator, and an observer.
Knowledge-based skills. Skill set 18 is about identifying and using methods to track group progress (Macgowan, 2012). Develop or sourcing a method of evaluation for a group is something that I feel unprepared to do. During the drafting of the group proposal, I began to see how quantitative data, such as birth weights can be tracked and used for evaluation as well as how qualitative methods such as feedback from participates can be compiled to format outcomes through evaluation tools. In the role of a facilitator, I was reminded of how challenging it can be to work with mandated clients. As a facilitator, I struggled to engage a resistant client and then I was reminded of how I felt during the experience when I was role-playing the part of a mandated client for a colleagues group. During Anne and Sarah’s group, I was the mandated client and I found that it was difficult to remain uncooperative and angry because both Sarah and Anne offered their genuineness, compassion, acknowledgement of my frustration and the flexibility to make the process as easier as they could. As both a facilitator and a participant I was again reminded of how important it is to be genuine, honest and engage in active listening when working with individuals and that these relationship building skills allow a connection that can be used to overcome
