Sex trafficking is using force, fraud, and/or persuasion to exploit another individual. This is a new form of slavery that forces people into a range of forced labor from preforming commercial sex acts or sex work like prostitution and pornography, to sometimes the trafficking of organs or even drugs, in exchange for items of value like money, food, drugs, shelter, etc. Many countries across the world are affected by sex trafficking it an international phenomenon. Women and minors make up a larger percentage of victims affected by sex trafficking, but it can happen to anyone. Using the theoretical perspectives of C. Wright Mills, Erving Goffman, and Rod Watson to explain sex trafficking as a functioning institution in society.

For example, people who are in need of work in order to care for themselves or their families. Those who find themselves in the unstable or the submissive position where they are more willing to accept extreme work conditions in order to obtain resources. These people may overlook warning signs and unknowingly compromise themselves when provided the opportunity for income. These people are not only being exploited for sexual work but in many other areas such as construction, factories, domestic work, and more. Girls and women are also more likely to be forced into sex trafficking because in many societies women are undervalued, therefore, at greater risk of being abused, trafficked or persuaded into slavery.
