The community based issue that I addressed was hunger in Southwest Florida. My goal in addressing hunger in Southwest Florida was to bring greater awareness and promote a sense of eagerness to volunteer. Over the course of working on the project, my understanding of the issue changed overtime. While working on the project, I learned a lot. I learned that there are a lot of hungry people in Southwest Florida, and the number is steadily increasing. I learned that in southwest Florida, the fastest growing segments of need includes children which accounts for 40 percent of those served, the working poor, and seniors on fixed income. Additionally, I also learned that most families in Southwest Florida are forced to make tough decisions between paying for housing, healthcare, and food. Being from Haiti, I know what it feels like to not have food, and know what it feels like to go to bed hungry at night. As a result, this project was very important to me I, and I was determined to make a difference. I am disciplined when it comes to food, and believe that food shouldn’t be thrown away unless it will cause you to get sick! I know the feeling of wondering where my next meal was going to come from during my years in Haiti. In addition, one of the many skills that I brought to Harry Chapin was my leadership skill, and my ability to get things done. As a leader, people always look up to you and expect you to guide them and that’s exactly what I did. I paved the way for my group, and made sure that everybody was on the same page in the group, and with our community partner.
