What was the Cold war? A question that challenged the three that I interviewed. I began to think maybe it has to do with Generation wise of why the question could not be answered to my surprise I was wrong; this is what I found. The first woman that I asked was a Librarian of 27 years Nancy Web. She disclosed her age of 62 years old. She is employed at the Arlington Correctional Facility and Arlington County Library Arlington, Virginia 22206. Her response was that it was a war that was very cold. When I asked her to elaborate she stated that she has heard of the Cold War but all she knew from the top of her head was that it involved the United States and the Soviet Union Capitalism Vs. The Cold War began after the end of WWII. Three leaders: President Franklin D. Roosevelt of the United States, Prime Minister Winston Churchill of Great Berlin and Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union met at the Yalta Conference. President Roosevelt and Churchill feared the US would be added with the Soviet Union and they greatly did not want this. Post war Germany was left defeated while Britain and France were left drained. Soviet wanted to spread Communism in Eastern Germany to create" Buffer Zone" A buffer is generally a zonal area that lies between two or more other areas (often, but not necessarily, countries), the reason for it was to segregate regions in Germany. In 1946, Europe divided into a Western Democracies/ United States Bloc and an East Soviet Union/Soviet occupied territory; this was known as the "Iron Curtain"; this separated Europe. The Marshall Plan occurred in 1947 when an order was put into effect to stop Russian influence to weakened Western Powers. USA sent economic aid to Europe democracies to help them rebuild. Billions of dollars was spent to help countries recover and reduce the influence of Communism. America now had a new Ally to help fight against Russia. Eastern Germany refused help. Subsequently East Germany Citizens crossed to western Germany and proclaimed themselves Refugees. In December 1948 Russia and United States parted ways. Russian still not wanted all of Berlin. Russia decided to isolate Berlin from American soldiers and supplies. The Berlin Blockade in 1948 Russia wanted Allied to surrender from starvation. This was clear to see but Russia used the excuse that they were doing major extensive repairs to the highways know one was fooled. America was not going to sit by and watch women, children and men starve to death. Berlin Airlift was in June 1948 was to provide West Berlin food and fuel. Cargo planes dropped food 24 hours a day. It was not until 1950, that a Reconciliation was made
