The next issue which needs to be addressed is the knowledge of curriculum of the special education teachers. As a campus, we must place these teachers in the classrooms that will have them succeed. It is imperative we have these teachers in one subject at a time and try not to put them in multiple departments. We must also try to place these teachers in classrooms that showcase their educational backgrounds.
I decided to become a special education teacher when I was in Middle School. I’ve pursued that goal ever since. I am really looking forward to having my own classroom and begin teaching my students. I decided to attend the Mountain Grove campus because it was close to home. It is a smaller campus, so it was an easy transition from high school to college.
Special Education Reform Within the past 100 years many reforms have been made that have significantly impacted education. When taking into to consideration, students with disability require different methods and education strategies. Due to all the changes and adjustments within the educational and teaching systems, our nation has experienced several negative and positive changes. Majority of have taken place since there is more public awareness and acknowledgment of disabilities.
When signing up for EDUC 201, I already knew I wanted to be a teacher. I am set on caring for my students, having a positive impact, and becoming an excellent educator. Usually when people tend to go for teaching, it is for the love of children and education. This SHOULD be the reason. People definitely shouldn't be doing it for summers off, or even worse, the giant paycheck teachers get.
The basis for my philosophy of education is that all students can learn. Based on my education, training, and more importantly; experiences as a special education teacher, I believe that all students can learn in their least restrictive environment. Based on experience, I learned very early in my teaching career that my interpretation of Least Restrictive Environment varies greatly from each sect of internal publics that I interact with on a daily basis. In short, I simply believe that all students belong and therefore should be able to participate alongside their “non-disabled” peers. To that point, learning and belonging can coincide with necessary support and individualized attention.
I believe all students can achieve and succeed in any classroom if challenged to their full potential. As a teacher, I continually engage in a high level of professional growth and application of skills to enhance my knowledge in my content area. Professionalism is a explemary quality trait of mine which I continue to value. I consistently exhibit a commitment to professional ethics and work hard in implementing the school’s mission statement to my students, which at Summerour Middle school it is “Working Hard, and Being Nice!” I am a teacher, an advocator, and a coach.
Special education came into existence almost exclusively within the last 50 years. Now, I realize that a student needing special education does not automatically mean that they will need help with everything and have an extremely difficult time learning.
