Special Education Reform Within the past 100 years many reforms have been made that have significantly impacted education. When taking into to consideration, students with disability require different methods and education strategies. Due to all the changes and adjustments within the educational and teaching systems, our nation has experienced several negative and positive changes. Majority of have taken place since there is more public awareness and acknowledgment of disabilities. Some of the changes that have taken place, during the IDEA 2004, no child was unrestricted, there has been changes and advancements in technology this has brought about several changes. “Inclusion has been seen improvement in learning for the classified and non-classified students (Liasidou & Antoniou, (2013). Inclusion has impacted students to accept differences amongst their peers and foster new friendships regardless of their differences and disabilities. This has also improved parent’s participations since they are opportunities to participate in the school and in their child education goals and development. This is also true because students with disabilities have been welcomed into the regular school setting and communities.
Another influential and positive change was the IDEA act of 2004 on public schools that enable them to render disability services to disable students. The IDEA act of 2004, states that “schools have a confirmatory responsibility to recognize, trace and evaluate students who they doubt may contain an incapacity, to assess them for possible suitability for special education services” (Leyser, Ziger, & Romi, …show more content…

This act ensures that both schools and teachers are equipped with the proper standards to effectively ensure that the students with disabilities are attaining and accomplishing their goals. This act has also had a positive and influential impact on the training of teachers. “The Montessori movement heading above would be used if you want to have your enables teachers to gain training and generate materials and improve what they delivered to their students” (Leyser et al., (2011). The development of the Montessori education is to guarantee the individuality of the student and to aid in the development and advancement of the students. The advancement of technology has also had positive influential impact on the development of special education within the educational setting. The advancement of technology has enable teachers to deliver their instructions to their students more effectively and efficiently. It has also afforded the students the ability to learn new skills and advancement opportunities.
Negative Changes It has been stated that the term “special education” has been frowned upon. The term has been known to have had a negative impact within our society. People in our society has always relate this term with being slow, retarded or handicapped. The main worry for most of the culprits was the difference between IDEA and NCLB.
