Diversity. Yet another buzzword being thrown about in the confusing maelstrom that is modern-day society ….or is it? Without a doubt, this very word contributes to the development of civilisations and a lack of it may spark social unrest amongst the populace of a nation. Therefore, it can be postulated that diversity is indeed, an inseparable part of society itself. Many a nation has been built upon diversity, a shining example being the relatively small island country of Malaysia. Within the small confines of this piece of land, varying individuals, all from different walks of life, go through their daily lives interacting with one another, getting acquainted with one another, and being intimate with one another. These interpersonal and intercultural relationships shape and mould the mindset of a person for the better, typically causing the individual to be more tolerant and accepting of others which makes the basis for social harmony to be established. Thus, there is no doubt that harmony within diversity must be nurtured and cherished. However, what does this statement actually mean? Before we get into the nitty-gritty of the subject, let’s clear up the definition of the word ‘diversity’. In a nutshell, diversity refers to a wide spectrum of varying aspects, be it physical or conceptual, populating a given group or community.
