Today we live in a time period where the education system itself is being changed on how we evaluate students in their education. We see the common core being implemented in many states. In New York there is more pressure to evaluate a student based on standardized testing. With this change, there are many teachers, parents and even superintendents, who are angry at this. Education is something that we have the right to receive; if we are not happy with the education we are receiving, then we have all rights to speak up on what we want to see in education.

With the reform system in place, many teachers are focused on being “the best”, which is now being measured by merit pay. Merit pay is essentially measures a teacher by how successful their students’ perform on tests. This type of pay not only affects the teachers mentality with the students, but also with other teachers because there is so much competition to be the best teacher. If teachers are in competition with each other then there will be less collaboration. In our early years, we are taught that it is best if we work together to accomplish our goals. In teaching, the same applies. If teachers collaborate, what they are doing to help students learn then teachers will know many ways to help their students accomplish all they can. Collaboration between teachers will not only make the workplace friendlier, but also create a place where students can learn to the best of their ability. This is because teachers will focus more on the students based on their personalities and outside abilities that cannot be determined by test
