In our English 12 class, we have to do a rhetorical analysis of the Steve Jobs commencement speech that he delivered to the Stanford Graduating students of class 2005. In this analysis essay, we have to look for the strategies that the author used in his text to make his audience understand his claim that he made in his speech. Moreover, we did the SOAPSTone and the close read of the article to have a better understanding of the text. Consequently, we look for the ethos, pathos, logos, and literary devices that the author used to prove his point. I learned a lot through this assignment.

In Steve Jobs’ brilliant and emotional 2005 Stanford commencement speech he connects with his listeners by relating to them using emotional personal tales. Steve Jobs uses many rhetorical devices in his speech to appeal to the audience in his “Finding What You Love” speech. He shows his ability to connect with the audience by relating through his time in college and how he was able to overcome the adversity he faced soon after dropping out. Adversity is something that everyone must go through throughout their life.
Looking at Steve Jobs, who used his charisma and driven, ‘get-to-the-point’ direct marketing approach to inspire many, is like looking at a study in sales and product launches. That the man meant business was always the undertone. Throughout the speech, Jobs combines his on insight with stories and anecdotes from his own life. Each of these anecdotes are designed to express a specific life lesson that Jobs has learned, and which he wishes to impart to his audience. A significant part of the rhetoric of the speech stems from Jobs's ability to use his own life experience to contextualize his own message. Throughout, this is combined with an ability to remain understated, and to make this understatement an integral of the manner in which his points are made and receiver.

Jarrell Yves L. Chua CSETHICS Aaron Swartz’s political advocacy was about the freedom of information to the public. He wanted to give the people the free access to academic journals, federal court documents, government issues, etc. He didn’t like the idea of having to pay for information or knowledge that a person should learn or know. I think that his main concern were the marginalized sectors, wherein they don’t have free access to knowledge, news, and other important documents. As a college student, I definitely agree with his political advocacy because a lot of people will benefit from it.

This trait of creativity always helps to come up with sudden new ideas of solving some problems in life.
