Classroom structure has a lot to do with how much students will be able to learn classrooms that are designed to discuss lectures and assignment provide students with more learning opportunities. Traditional classroom methods are becoming a thing of the past, teachers are expected to provide students with engaging material not just lecture to them and expect them to understand what is being said. I can appreciate this as an ELL student because sometime I am unable to understand what my professor says and it makes me uncomfortable to ask questions. My professors in the past especially in my country do not allot a lot of time to student for question. I think the quote at the beginning of this chapter thumbs up for education is headed. Mathematics is no difference and requires students to argue to prove things true or false and to create and explain valid points. When students learn to argue they are learning social skills that involve reasoning and communication. When students are able to have discussions in class they gain the ability to communicate logically. Before students are able to argue they must first practice making hypotheses, “The level of sophistication of a conjecture and the nature of an argument justifying it should increase across the grades of students become more mathematically sophisticated” (P.280). This means that as students learn from one another and their teacher that they are building a new skill set.
