When a student begins their college experience they are faced with a few obstacles. Such as figuring out how to manage time, not being academically prepared, and the lack of a support group.
The key to success in any college course is to spend enough time studying. It’s important that you know how to manage your own time, incorporating 2 to 3 hours per week for every unit they are taking. For example, a student taking 12 credits should expect to spend 24 to 36 hours a week studying outside of class. Taking the time in class, this comes out to a total of 45 to 60 hours spent on academic work alone. Many high school students do not know what to study or where to study. So before anything happens, ask yourself; What’s your goal? After college what do you see yourself doing, and how will college help you to achieve that goal? Set an academic goal for yourself, that means set a goal in which you are interested and capable to achieve. Students should look at college as a marathon, which begins prior to the first year of college, they will need to prepare themselves before this new academic adventure begins. College takes a lot of responsibility, it's all up to you once you step foot onto campus. You don’t have to go class, you don’t have to pay attention or be there the whole class time, you pick your own schedule. Being academically prepared is all up to you. But you won’t have to do it alone, with the support of friends and family success is within any students grasps. Whether it’s parents, a mentor, or classmates, it’s important for students to build their support system throughout their academic career, so they have sufficient support when they need it most. Friends and family are great options that may come to mind first; however, but what happens when they aren’t able to answer the harder questions. You can also learn a lot from your classmates, even if you’re not the best of friends. Talk to other students, make new friends you never know they could have the same interest as you or if they already took a class you took it's always good to have another opinion when doing homework for class. Mentors can provide academic guidance as well as insight on personal or professional matters. A mentor can also write letters of recommendation and maybe even help you make professional connections.
