Substance Abuse and Personal Relationships

Introduction Wether it is alcohol, marijuana, or pain killers, it is likely that you or someone you know uses substances. With a rise in medical and recreational marijuana use, in addition to the amount of people addicted to perception medication. It is imperative that research is done on how the use of these substances impact ones personal relationships and those closest the them. The following review of literature will provide information pertaining to prior research conducted that found associations between substance abuse and some aspect of social or personal relationships.

Arguing that patients may not view their substance use as damaging therefore omitting information about a potential cause of their problems. They found that substance abusers report higher than average divorce rates. 24% of men reported carrying out intimate partner violence against woman, and 37% of women reported carrying out intimate partner violence against men. Co-dependent couples demonstrated the growth of strong attachments with their partners that becomes “addictive”. Foster et al. (2013), similarly found that despite females reporting being turned off by their partners drug use, they claim feeling close, alive, and more comfortable with their partners, indicating a stronger bond for intimate partners that use drugs together. As for partners that both use substances Foster et al. (2013), concluded that introducing a significant other to a new substance is viewed as a bonding experience (mentioned earlier).
