James, the primary nurse, is to prep the patient for surgery. However, James has never prepped a patient for this type of surgery, and the scenario is complicated further because the patient cannot speak.
Key Issues to Consider When Delegating an Assignment
Delegation in nursing is defined as the process of a nurse to direct another person to perform nursing tasks and activities (Huber, 2014). There are several key issues to consider when delegating a task. Is there potential for harm? How complex is the task? How much problem solving and innovation is required? Will the patient’s outcome be unpredictable? What is the level of interaction of the patient (Huber, 2014)? The five rights of delegation must also be considered. Right task, right circumstance, right person, right direction/communication, and right supervision, evaluation (Huber, 2014).
