In chapter 5 of The Blue Sweater, which was written by Jacqueline Novogratz, Jacqueline was a good listener who drew my attention. Novogratz explains that the only way to create a good business was to listen to the people who work with you. Jacqueline was ready to learn from the Rwandan women by listening to whatever thing they had to say. “On the other, I began to understand that I could have listened better, for listening is not just having the patience to wait, it is also learning how to ask the questions themselves” (86).in order to make a successful bakery business, she went to a great depth to listen to the African women. In Night the families were split up and in Between Shades of Gray they were able to stay together. Also in Night the officers killed majority of them and in Between Shades of Gray the NKVD didn’t really kill them. Now there was also many similarities between Night and Between Shades of Gray. In her book, From Out of the Shadows, Viki L. Ruiz argues the contributions to history that was made by farm workers, activists, leaders, volunteers, feminists, flappers, and Mexican women. She explores the lives of the innovative and brave immigrant women, their goals and choices they make, and how they helped develop the Latino American community. While their stories were kept in the shadows, Ruiz used documented investigations and interviews to expose the accounts of these ‘invisible’ women, the communities they created, and the struggles they faced in hostile environments. The narrative and heartfelt approach used by Ruiz give the reader the evidence to understand as well as the details to identify or empathize with.
Many people have learned about the Holocaust throughout the years, but learning about it from a primary source is a whole different experience. A scary journey that turned out to be the Holocaust has been told by two individuals that survived. These two stories tell the reader what life was like and what they went through. Even though the conditions were terrible, both Eli and Lina were able to survive and break away through fear, horrendous experiences, and hope that lead them to surviving and leaving people they cared about behind.
In Between Shades of Gray, the author illustrates the theme of unity throughout the book, while in Night, the author demonstrates the theme of self-preservation. For example, in Between Shades of Gray, as Christmas approaches, Lina describes, "We gathered each night to hear about someone’s holiday celebration. We grew to know each other through our longings and cherished memories. Mother insisted that we invite the grouchy woman to our meetings. She said that just because she had signed didn’t mean that she wasn’t homesick" (Sepetys, 201).

Octavia Butler uses symbolism to highlight how the irregular occurrence of time travel forces Dana to accept slavery and how her past will “live” in her presence. Dana is forced to assimilate to the past because she has no control over her fate, and her life in the past revolves around slavery. The fact that Dana quickly transitions from the past to the present shows that she is quick to accept this time of slavery even though she is not mentally prepared for it. After Dana is disturbed by the inhumanity that the children show by playing an auction game, she says, “The ease. Us, the children… I never realized how easily people could be trained to accept slavery” (Butler 101).
It can’t be forgotten that she is fighting in a war still, and the horrors of war still are present. “I had learned much; I now knew how thoroughly I despised war. The great adventure and glory of it were the corrupted visions of men. I had been mislead somehow and wandered willingly into the dreams of strangers. I could have deserted.
