Bella Young Mr. Baldridge English May 15, 2024 Between Shades of Gray Do you believe you could survive being deported and its awful hardships? The book Between Shades of Gray has three main characters: Lina, Jonas, and Andrius. All three characters go through that hardship, however, it is their characteristics of bravery, strength, and tenacity that get them through this difficult time. Lina, Jonas, and Andrius are all average kids. They lived in good homes, and went to school, but when the NKVD took over many Lithuanian homes everything changed. They were sent in a truck with a few other people and sent to a camp where they were forced to work; this is when strength, bravery, and tenacity came in hand. They are all strong, however, in each of their unique ways. Lina is strong in multiple ways throughout the book, a time that stood out was when she had to care for her mother and Jonas when they were ill. Lina, Jonas, and Andrius were brave even when things seemed frightening. Lina drew her drawings, even though she knew she would be in tremendous trouble if they were found. Andrius brought food to people when he knew that being caught would get him killed. All three had tenacity, because no matter what, they never gave up. During the work camps, it would have been easy to give up, but not once did Lina, Jonas or Andrius do so. Strength, bravery, and tenacity are three characteristics that came easily to Lina, Jonas, and Andrius. But having other characteristics uniquely helped them each. Throughout the book, Lina, Jonas, and Andrius all have many characteristics that are alike; however, they also have many that are different. Andrius is a serious and straightforward character, he does not often joke around and acts like a mature
