In “Social Media: establishing Criteria for Law Enforcement Use,” Robert D. Stuart, explains that social media usage prevalent in today’s society. Stuart explains that personal social media accounts of individual police officers can bring shame on a police department, call an officer’s fitness into question, and cause issue in criminal trials.
Stuart makes his case by explaining an instance of resulting in an officer being accused of excessive force for content located on his personal Myspace page. If the officer had personal demons that were not made public, the defense in that case would not have been given the ammunition to argue that the officer was not obeying the restrictions on his profession.
