In conclusion, Macy’s is a struggling enterprise that is having a hard time keeping up with shopper’s demands. Macy’s has been around since 1858, so perhaps it's time to close the business. “It’s Good Business,” by Robert Solomon presents the concept of ethics within the business world, and argues against greed and amoral thinking, as being inherent in business. This paper will address seven questions presented by Shaw and Barry (2016) using Solomon’s reading as a backdrop to explore how and why ethical errors occur within business; whether the “myth of amoral business” exists; and, whether unethical behavior hurts business as a whole
In Robertson Davies' Fifth Business, guilt develops as the major theme that is connected to each significant occurrence in the story. Davies portrays the various ways a character reacts to the feeling of guilt. The story perfectly captures the human mind, how much impact an event can have on a person’s mindset. Davies shows the struggles Paul and Dunny deal with because of their guilt, while character’s like Percy, ignore the guilt and shift the blame towards someone else. The message of Fifth Business explains the hardships of guilt and how to overcome it.
The cheating, although unacceptable, was the outcome of an organization whose culture had created an environment where counterproductive work behavior had become the norm. The sheer number of juniors implicated in the cheating scandal suggests that this was a learned behavior. Organizational culture is a collection of shared concepts, learned overtime, which influence behavior that impacts multi-level outcomes (Kinicki & Fugate, 2016). A healthy organizational culture produces positive organizational work behavior. Conversely, counterproductive work behavior (CWB) represents behavior that harms other employees, the organization as a whole, or organizational stakeholders.

Introduction In business, the prevalence of unethical decision-making and finding ways to curb these tendencies creates a dilemma. According to Kim, Fisher, and McCalman (2009), these problems stem from the past hundreds of years in which society strived to separate spirituality from business. The problem is that in order for ethical behavior to exist, a definitive view of right and wrong must be established (Kim, Fisher, & McCalman, 2009).

The theme of guilt is evident in the speculative fiction novel Fifth Business by Robertson Davies and the tragedy play Hamlet by William Shakespeare. Guilt is defined as having committed an offence, crime, or violation. In Hamlet the theme of guilt is present in young Hamlet’s character for not avenging his father’s death. Guilt is evident in Claudius when he repents in his soliloquy for the sins he has committed. Gertrude feels guilty as well because she is partially to blame for
The ethical climate of an organization can both impact the employees who join the firm, and be impacted by employees. For example, an individual who has thrived in a trusteeship and then joins a profit-maximizing organization, may struggle to assimilate to the culture, and ultimately leave. Conversely, a quality-of-life management organization may appoint a president or CEO whose style aligns with a profit-maximizing management structure, and that individual may drive a cultural change in the organization. Profit-maximizing organizations drive a corporate culture of serving one’s own interests, treating individuals as commodities to drive the bottom line, and values profits over people (Manning, & Curtis, 2012). A good example of a profit-maximizing environment can be found in the accounts of Goldman Sachs employees (Bourne, 2015).
Companies producing products must get their materials from somewhere. Often if they must mine these materials, it’s done in a poor country where they can get away with unethical working conditions. Unethical working conditions are described as exposing workers to hazardous conditions (the mine could collapse, they breathe in toxic chemicals, etc.), Many mining chains use child labor and put these children at risk, also chemicals released from mining cobalt get put into the atmosphere and are eventually absorbed into the soil or water around the mining site. It’s important for companies to prove that their product is or isn’t ethical because companies should be transparent about how their products are made. This would provide protection to both
The art of Business Bluffing, as Carr would describe it is “simply as game strategy—much like bluffing in poker. ”(A. Carr) However, it could more aptly be described as lying, cheating, and bribing all in the name of achieving business objectives. An article published in 1968 entitled, “Is Business Bluffing Ethical?” Albert Carr maintained that Business Bluffing is ethical.
Introduction Ethics in business education In the recent past, unethical practices in the corporate world have put pressure o organisations to focus more on ethical business practices. The events of Exxon and the global economic depression of 2009 are two examples of how unethical business practices geared solely to generate profit ended up costing the common man trillions of shillings. This shift in public opinion has in turn, forced institutions of higher learning to pay more attention to the quality of graduates they release into the work place in terms of not only thei profesiaonalism but their moral values as well. Young proffesionals first emcounter professional ethics in universities and colleges where they learn theyre trade, as such,
Upon graduation from the University of Mary Washington with a degree in International Business and a minor in Practical Ethics, I intend to pursue a career in the field of business ethics. Ethical concerns and questions arise in almost every facet of human activity. As businesses endow a great influence in our lives, it is vital to understand how ethical theory can be applied to practical issues that affect stakeholders. During my time in the Center for Honor, Leadership, and Service I have aimed to encourage UMW students to make ethical influences through acts of community service and involvement with businesses in Fredericksburg. At the time of my degree completion, I will be highly qualified to pursue further studies or a career in ethics
