Wetherell tells us about this narrator who has a big crush on this girl at his summer house. Sheila is older, and the narrator is just a kid that likes to fish. The narrator and the girl, Sheila Mant, play ball together, and that's where the narrator asks her out. He went through all this great amount of trouble for her and also had to leave a bass for this girl. But later when they got there, they had a good time. He even got a dance with her but after they were going home, she left him for another guy and got into his nice fancy car. The narrator had to stroke home alone in his boatcanoe. At the beginning of the story, the narrator talks about this girl he likes. He would do all these things to try to impress her with tricks to show off to Sheila Mant. Even though he tried to impress her all the time, it took the whole summer for him to work up the courage to ask her out, as shown in this quote:“It was late August by the time I got up the nerve to ask her out” (Wetherell 1). The narrator took the whole summer to ask her out. While he has never spoken a word to this girl, one day he just impulsively asks her out when they are playing ball. The narrator started to feel anxious after she asked him if he had a car.
