Journal 1 I am reading “the bass, the river, and Shelia Mant ” by W.D Wetherill. So far this story is about this boy who likes a girl that joust moved near bass boy. In this journal I will be questioning and As I read this story, I wonder if the narrator will pick bass or Sheila. It is possible that he’ll pick the bass.
In the short story, “The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant”, written by W.D Wetherell, there's a young 14 year old boy who goes unnamed throughout the whole story and lives in an old cabin with his family on the edge of the river. The unnamed boy gets a new neighbor and starts developing a crush on them. This girl went by Sheila Mants, and he was bound to impress her. Overall, he’s a flat character. He’s one of the main characters in this story and not much happens in detail with him.
The boy can either choose to keep the girl, or the bass. He ends up choosing the girl. We know that he gives up the bass from how he cuts the line to let the bass go. The boy had chosen to keep Sheila over the bass, from how she looked in the boat when she had reached her arms towards and the boy could see the shape of her body. The narrator regrets his decision, due to Sheila leaving him during their date to take a ride in Eric Caswell’s Corvette.
The Bass, the River and Sheila Mant In the beginning of the story the narrator falls in love with Sheila Mant. As the story develops he learns that she thinks fishing is dumb, since he loves fishing he is dumbfounded. As to not offput her cuts a bass off his line. That choice goes wrong as she leaves him for someone else.

The narrator has a major crush on a women- seventeen year old, Sheila Mant. The narrator finally, and I say finally, asks Sheila on a date via the narrator’s boat.
There are two narrators chasing after each other, but the other doesn’t like the narrator. Some of the similarities that the narrators have in common are that they are chasing after their lover. They are also both in high school. In the first short story, The bass and river and Sheila Mant, Sheila Mant is 17 years old and the narrator is 14 years old.
In addition, Tim O’Brien conveys how society’s view on cowardice leads to the feeling of guilt in soldiers in the Vietnam War. In “On The Rainy River”, O’Brien claims that he opposes the Vietnam War, and he sees no reason for the war. However, against his own will, he is drafted and is required to go to war. O’Brien reacts negatively to this saying, “All I wanted was to live the life I was born to... now I was off on the margins of exile, leaving my country forever, and it seemed so impossible and terrible and sad,” (50 and 51).
To me Reverend Maclean’s final sermon in A River Runs Through It means that everyone will have someone the love go through something terrible, but we don 't know how to help. There are multiple ways that you can think about this. The issue at hand could be mental, physical, short-term, or long-term problem. Reverend Maclean 's sermon means that giving help can be very frustrating and at time hard to figure out. Mental help is the hardest to figure out.
Aileen Chavarria English 240 March 18, 2017 Poetry Reading Response “In the Station of the Metro” is an imagist poem and it’s structured to convey a specific mental image through precise description. “Crossing the Swamp” doesn’t follow a certain scheme but instead focuses on certain phrases within the zigzag formation it’s written in. Both structures work for their individual poem because Ezra Pound uses exact description to get a subtle concept across while Mary Oliver uses descriptive language to make the swamp come alive and instill a similar state of mind that the author goes through as the poem progresses.

The two stories, “The Lesson” and “Everyday Use” involve main characters that hold differences and similarities. In both stories the main characters were well educated, African American woman. During Toni Cade Bambara’s story “The Lesson”, the main character Miss Moore used her education to help the children in her hometown. Whereas in Alice Walker’s story “Everyday Use”, Wangero decided to use her education in a way that took things away from her family and past. Wangero could care less how her family was doing and entered their home like a fire taking everything in her wake.
No matter how people learn lessons, they will stay with the person forever, and help them through life. In the short stories “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara and “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, there is lesson that a character will learn about life. Although, in “The Lesson”, the teaching was more profound and had a deeper meaning behind it, while “Girl” was a parent forcing instructions on a child in order for the child to learn how a woman is to live. This being said, the teaching is more profound in “The Lesson” than the one given in “Girl.” “Girl” is a short story that teaches that there are many lessons we learn throughout life from parents, or in this case, a single parent.
In the stories “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto and “Stolen Day” by Sherwood Anderson” there are similarities and differences between Victor and the narrator’s problems, lessons, and character traits. The characters traits of the two characters are: Victor he is foolish, shy, and nervous. the boy he is acting scared, and confused. They are both different the similarities to the two characters are that they both are shy, scared, and funny.
