In the United States, an average of 25% of Americans have not read a book in the last year, can it be because the school systems are not giving the right fiction or novel readings that will get students’ attention. The fact that the amount of students that don’t read books and the school board trying to get rid of fiction and novel books are intertwine with each other because the students are not reading the right kinds of books that are related to the real world. In the novel, “Dear Martin”, the boy Justyce has been faced with police brutality and racial profiling. As mentioned in the end of Chapter 14. “I bet he’s totally profiling us right now. Probably thinks we’re drug dealers or something”, this is stating that people are still profiling others in the fictional world as people do in the real world. Due to the experiences that Jus and Manny of being profiled against we get a small understanding of how profiling works and it is making us more aware about profiling which goes back to what I was saying, that fiction novels can teach real world issues. In the beginning of chapter 7, Jared believes that, “ because he is white and you're black, he’s more intelligent than you are.” This is showing that people still believe that the Whites are superior than Blacks in books and this is an issue that happens today in the world. By Jared assuming that he is smarter than Jus, shows profiling that African Americans are less than Whites and that is showing that things in the real world make ideas for those that make fiction books. Fiction should be part of the school curriculum because fiction teaches the students things that happen in the real world since fiction gets ideas from the real
