Having a mental illness such as depression or anxiety can lead to isolation. A lot of students have so much school work they have to do, that they do not get to do activities other than their homework. Most students go into isolation because they feel pressured to prioritize school work rather than having a social life. It was found that “children or teens may need intervention to prevent feelings of guilt, trauma, or social isolation” (National Institutes, 2007). Being isolated for so long can create long-term effects for these students. Typically, those who don’t have social interaction with others, end up with social and emotional issues as an adult. Isolation can have long-lasting effects on teens that carry over to adulthood while in college or in a job. The authors from “The Case Against Homework: How Homework Is Hurting” censured “both the quantity and quality of homework. They provided evidence that too much homework harms students' health and family time, and they asserted that teachers are not well trained in how to assign homework” (Marzano & Pickering, 2007). All of this is a result of students being overwhelmed with homework and feeling as if they have no help at all or support from people around them.
