I reviewed the article The Ideal and the Real of Breast-Feeding by Jane E. Brody. In this article the author is basically pointing out everything that is hard about breast-feeding. I found the line “that breast-feeding involves a serious time commitment that pretty much guarantees that you will not work in any meaningful way” offensive. Breast-feeding is meaningful and healthful for infants. The author points out that mothers want to get back to their pre-pregnancy lives. Unfortunately, if your pre- pregnancy life was so important to you perhaps you should not have decided to become a mother. While the textbook does not address these social issues facing breast feeding mothers. I can, from first- hand knowledge, say that yes breast feeding is hard on mothers. It is often physically painful, time consuming, and both mentally and physically exhausting. Brody seems very concerned that older children are left out of bonding with baby and neglected by the new mother. Again, the text does not offer information on this topic but as I have three children ages 14,11 and 9 and am currently breastfeeding a three-month-old baby I can tell you that my children understand how important breastfeeding is for their little sister and they are in no way neglected. Of course, there is pressure on new moms, there always will be. The solution to this pressure is not opting out of breastfeeding it is division of labor for things like grocery shopping, night feedings, house chores.
