Babysitting is something I can typically be found doing at least once a week and most of my friends have at least one child. Although I do not have children yet, I plan to eventually have children, or at least one child. I have not put much thought into the nutrition of this future child or children. However, because so many of my family and friends have children, I have been a witness to the struggles of breastfeeding, formula feeding, getting children to eat healthy, and trying to maintain healthy family eating habits, among a multitude of other concerns. Breastfeeding seems to be a hot topic in our society today, and therefore, it is probably the only part of my hypothetical child’s nutrition I have put any thought into previously. Despite the struggles of breastfeeding, I believe it would be my preferred method of feeding for my theoretical child, at least for the first six months of life. Breastfeeding seems to have the greatest benefits for both mother and baby and a multitude of studies have shown these abundant benefits. Nevertheless, I know there are hardships that may prevent breastfeeding, which can be minor issues such as having difficulty getting the infant to latch, or major issues like not being able to produce enough milk, and therefore, if formula feeding became a necessity, it would be comforting to know that formula feeding would be a safe alternative. It appears from my own family and friends, the mothers who breastfeed often also had mothers who breastfed them. This may not be of any significance, but I believe that may help encourage a mother to breastfeed because they would be more likely to have knowledge about breastfeeding, as well as have someone to encourage them and give tips on how they made this method work for
