The book is an adaptation of the scripts from the Netflix Original Series, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is about a girl who was imprisoned by a cult leader as a teenager from the Midwest, freed after 15 years and decides to move to New York. The beginning in the book starts off with four women celebrating Christmas, wearing old fashioned dresses in a rusting bunker. They were interrupted by their one door being knocked down by soldiers. She was kidnapped when she was 14 and barely had an 8th grade education. As she was experiencing life in this new world, Kimmy saw an ad in the newspaper for a roommate. While reading the newspaper, Kimmy saw a little kid stealing candy. She scolded him, but he ran away. Kimmy went to the apartment and talked to the landlord, an old woman named Lillian. Lillian guided her to the small apartment and she introduced Kimmy to Titus. Titus was a black, gay man who was a struggling actor and didn’t have any money. Titus was rude and denied Kimmy because she lacked basic information. Kimmy decided to get a job and while talking to a manager, she saw the same little boy steal candy again. He ran away and she chased him home where she met his socialite mother. She offered her a job to be the kid, Buckley, and his teen, step-sister, Xanthrope. Titus agreed to live with Kimmy when she came back confirming she had a job. She and Titus went out to celebrate and when all of Kimmy’s money was stolen. Shortly after, Titus found out she was a Mole Woman. He told her to leave the city as soon as possible. On her way to a bus stop, Kimmy is reminded a moment in the bunker when she found a rat. She had shown it to her sister, declaring that Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne was lying about all life being gone besides them. It inspired Kimmy to not give up. Kimmy went to Titus’ low paying job, telling him that he shouldn’t give up on his dreams of being an actor.
