After reading the article “Using Experiential Activities with Adolescents to Promote Respect for Diversity”, I learned that that activities can assists student by challenging their preconceptions about other cultures and their own self-awareness. As a counselor, I will be responsible for helping my students cultivate competencies that help them become educated and ultimately be able to work and live in society made up of people from many difference backgrounds, beliefs, traditions and possibility areas of the world.

Diversity and social justice-related issues can have substantial effects on student’s academic, social/emotional and educational development. These issues can affect how they develop relationships, their personal self-image and finally how they cope with society. Through the learning activities, they can develop relationships with other students and an understanding of cultures they knew little of prior to the game(s) (Roaten & Schmidt, 2009). This article stated that activities used to discover cultural identity and ethnicity can help with a sense of belonging (Roaten & Schmidt, 2009). I believe these experiential activities will assistance students to think for critically about multicultural issues they read about or hear about in the news.
