Do you believe that college athletes should be allowed to benefit from their name, image, and likeness (N.I.L.)? The big talk of all college athletics is whether or not players should be allowed to get paid and accept sponsors for N.I.L. Giving the players the ability to receive money while still in college dates back to the early 2000s. The conversation started mostly with college video games being able to use the players and their names without their permission or any pay. In college sports, there have been multiple good arguments as to why it should be allowed and why it should not be allowed. In the article “Why NIL is bad for college sports”, Baxton lists several reasons why he believes in N.I.L. is a bad thing and what it could lead to. Firstly, he states that there is a concern that teams can become too uneven and unfair to others. I believe that it could create a more level playing field and provide better entertainment and competition. Secondly, Baxton says that there is a fear that players will have more of a focus on their sport rather than their education. Although this could happen, I don't believe this has anything to do with N.I.L. as it's been happening for years. There are many instances where players are taking easier classes just to get the grades to play sports. Lastly, he states “Another concern is that NIL could lead to a loss of team cohesion and a focus on individual success”. I can't entirely agree with this statement because I believe the main characteristic that scouts look for is their ability to get along with others and have good teamwork. Not only does this help get looked at by scouts, but it will also help teams win and everyone wants to
