In The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me by Sherman Alexie, Alexie states “A smart Indian is a dangerous person, widely feared and ridiculed by Indians and non-Indians alike” (Alexie 364). I would have to disagree with this statement. He is making it sound like just because he is a minority that received somewhat of an education, he should be feared by others. I believe that anyone who is smart and forceful in a community is dangerous because they have the willpower to go to any lengths to uphold their beliefs. On the other hand, I also believe that just because you are smart, you don’t necessarily have to be feared.

Did you know that the United States ranks 17th in education performance? That is a huge drop from 1980 when the United States was ranked 1st. Clearly, our education system has gone in a downward spiral and is struggling to keep up with other countries. The documentary, “Waiting for Superman” by David Guggenheim, and the article, “Idiot Nation” by Michael Moore, discuss the weaknesses in our education system. Although both authors offer compelling arguments, “Waiting for Superman” contained a better argument because of its abundance of rhetorical strategies, whereas “Idiot Nation” contained some logical fallacies.
In Charlotte E. Howell’s, “Tricky” Connotations: Wonder Woman as DC’s Brand Disruptor,” Howell argues the many points on how DC Comics failed to represent Wonder Woman in a superhero leading role for many years. The author discusses how DC failed to see that the comic book industry fan base consisted not only of males, but also, many female fans as well (141-142). In addition, she points out DC’s use of the word “tricky” in regards to marketing and film production for Wonder Woman; DC Comics couldn’t come up with a way to envision an on screen leading role for Wonder Woman or how to market one (142). As a result, Howell gives examples of how the fans weaponized the term “tricky” to show DC’s business failings (141-143). Furthermore, she points out how the many scripts were leaked and how the public scrutinized the writers on their attempts to represent an accurate Wonder Woman character (144-145).
Mostly every superhero has to go through long dangerous journeys to save the day. In fact, both Beowulf and Superman have to travel through dangerous journeys in order to save their people. Beowulf traveled from Geatsland to the land of the Danes and offer king Hrothgar help defeat Grendel, the horrible monster terrorizing this land. Beowulf travels this menacing journey where he has to fight Grendel, Grendel’s mother and a dragon. In contrast to Superman who was born on Krypton but later sent to earth because an explosion was going to destroy his planet.
Modern heroes have not changed. As I was comparing Beowulf and Superman, I realized that they had a lot of similarities. Beowulf and Superman were brave and courageous heroes. They were both strong. These heroes were well liked.

Throughout the decades men have dominated the comic-book industry. They played a very important role in perpetuating stereotypes. The male writers, publishers, editors, and creators wrote for the their target audience, which was primarily young boys. The 90s was a period of time where society obsessed over male strength, which in turn led the idea of how fragile a woman is compared to a man. Batman and Batgirl are both human superheroes; they do not have any special healing factor or any other kind of superpowers.
In the story the joy of reading Superman and me Sherman Alexie tells an emotional story of both hardship and success. He shares his struggles of being a poor Indian kid destined to fail, but he had a desire to be persevere he wanted to be more than the stereotypical uneducated Indian on a reservation and was determined to do so. He was inspired by his father to love books, and with the love for books came the ability to escape from the boundaries of the reservation and the dream to be more. Alexie shares how he taught his self to read with a superman comic book and with his witty metaphors how it shaped his life. I found Alexis story to be emotional, but yet very interesting.
An example of Superman’s super strength would be when he is fighting the bad guys and picks up cars and other heavy objects to use as weapons. Even though both heroes share the power of super strength, Superman possess other attributes that are unique to only him. Superman has the ability to fly anywhere he wants. An example of Superman flying would be when Superman is flying around to help save the towns people during a fight with the bad guys. Superman is also immortal, unlike Beowulf.

Batman v Superman The rivalry between the Gotham knight and the kryptonian has gone on for decades. Both are popular superheroes who do good for others, and fight for their city. Each have their own way of handling villains and the safety of the world but the argument always goes back to who is the better hero? Batman and Superman have fought alongside each other for years, yet they are always compared to one another.
Most female superheroes are the counterpart of a male version, i.e. Superman/Supergirl, Batman/Batgirl, Captain America/Miss America, etc. implying that woman cannot exist without man. According to Lavin, “the uneasy contradiction between strength and dependence (and in extreme cases, between strength and subservience) has characterized much of the history of female comic characters” (Lavin 94). When women were first introduced and included in the superhero teams, the heroin has softer powers in contract to the superhero who has stronger powers.
I am just going to get it out of the way in the beginning that I am not a superhero movie or comic fan. I have not followed any series, or any particular superhero’s story. I do have seen some movies randomly, but that’s it. So I have no clue whether the film on Wonder Woman was accurate, or if some parts are missing or the story has been tweaked. I write this article as a newbie’s experience of the superhero world.
