As with any sort of company integration, it is impossible to take only the good and leave out the negative, and Verizon must understand that in acquiring Yahoo, with opportunity comes threat. With the recent hackings Yahoo has been victim to, there are many threats Verizon must be aware of before making any acquisition decisions. Some of these threats are more obvious than others, but they are all crucial in determining the success of the integrating company.
There is no question that Yahoo has been targeted as a vulnerable company for hackers to attack. The company has been a victim of two major hackings since 2014, and acquisition of such a company means taking on the threat of being hacked in the future. The recent hackings have proven to be a threat to Yahoo’s overall safety, as valuable customer information is in the hands of an unauthorized third parties. Verizon, who does not have a history of being hacked like Yahoo does, risks being so if they acquire a company with that sort of history. The news of hacks against Yahoo have had obvious impacts on the business. People who may have been considering opening a Yahoo account may have decided not to, and existing customers may have switched over to competitors like Google. who do not have so many security concerns. The deal to acquire Yahoo is public, and Verizon faces the threat of having people associate the high-risk, low-security image of Yahoo with Verizon. If Verizon does decide to go through with the purchase of Yahoo, they will have to invest in rebranding Yahoo and ensuring customers that under new management the company will not have the same weaknesses as
