Throughout this assignment, I was able to learn about both the ELPS and TLPAS in greater detail than I have in the past. I learned that these programs have a significant impact on schools, and that teachers play a large role in implementing these programs. Overall, I learned what exactly these programs are, the role of the teacher in these programs, and how they impact the students in the classroom. Students who are in grades 2-12 take the listening, speaking, and reading portions of the test online, while the writing portion is assessed holistically and through classroom performance. However, students in grades Kindergarten and 1st are assessed holistically over all the domains. Teachers play a major role in the areas that are scored by classroom performance assessment, as they are the ones who do the bulk of the observations. However, not everyone is qualified to assess students over TELPAS. TELPAS uses teacher raters for the holistically scored areas. In order to be a rater, a teacher must meet four criteria. They must “have the student in class, be knowledgeable about the student’s ability to use English in instructional and informal settings, hold valid education credentials, and be appropriately trained.” However, raters are also encouraged to collaborate with other professionals who have a knowledge of the student’s English
