Taekwondo Club Mission Statement

The Denison Taekwondo Club is a student led organization that is an extension of the Introduction to Taekwondo class. Though the club is student led, legal and liability reasons require that the club is overseen by a certified Taekwondo instructor. Denison’s Taekwondo Club meets three times a week while weekends provide an opportunity for members to join sessions at the Westerville Taekwondo Dojo. Being associated with the Westerville Dojo, the club falls under Taekwondo America, the national organization that oversees and standardizes the teaching methods of schools across the nation. Consequently, this case study will apply and use Taekwondo America’s mission statement as well as its codes of conduct and philosophy of martial arts.

This is reflected in the fact that a good chunk of those who do participate in martial arts have backgrounds in the military, law enforcement, or security agencies. So what ethical implications come from the consumption of martial arts outside of these fields? For a time the fight between boxing icons Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao exploded on social media and press coverage, giving attention to the professional boxing world that has not been seen in decades. Almost immediately after that, UFC Women Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey became a national sensation, gaining the interest of those who had never had an interest in martial arts. As a martial artist myself, it would almost criminal to have martial arts become interpreted as slugfest between two individuals by those who have hopped on the bandwagon. This may have ethical implications in the form of the abuse of martial arts. If a person intercepts martial arts as merely a form of violence what implications does this have? If a person only values the physical aspect of martial arts and not the spiritual and philosophical aspects of martial arts how does it influence the use of martial
