The reason that I want to become a teacher is to help students learn the knowledge and skills that they will need to be prepared for life. Had it not been for my mother, Sheila Kelley, and Mrs. Jane Hoffman, my teacher and speech therapist, I would not be attending Coastal Carolina today . Because of their influence in my life, I have the opportunity to become a teacher. As such, I hope to help prepare my students to meet the challenges of life and, perhaps, to achieve their lifetime goals. I hope to one day see one of my old students and know that I did my part to the best of my ability in helping them become all that he or she could be. At our family business where my mother worked, I had an easel, markers, dry erasers, white out, and fours cousins who would either be teacher or student for that day. There was no trash can that did not have our names written on them in white out and no wall safe from our doodles and mathematical equations. At the age of six, I was diagnosed with dyslexia and an auditory perception disability. For a full year my mother took me to doctors and speech therapists trying to find someone or something to help me. My mother would not give up. She traveled around the state attending classes and workshops for parents of children with learning disabilities. Because of her love and determination, she found Heathwood Hall School and Mrs. Hoffman. Through my mom and Mrs. Hoffman, I was shown how to work around my disabilities. It was not easy ,and my grades were not the best in the world. But, because of their patience, determination, and daily tutoring, I found a way to
