Teaching is important to me because I feel that every child should have a place where they feel cared for and believed in. Since school is where most children spend the majority of their day, being a teacher is a perfect career to provide this safe place for them. I have had a passion for working with kids since my childhood and every year, that deepens as I watch more and more kids grow emotionally, as well as academically. I want to help students reach their potential in every aspect of their life while fostering their love of learning. With these motivations to become an educator, I have found myself resonating most with the Humanistic learning theory. As a professional educator I believe that all children are capable of success. Students need to respect one another, teachers need to respect the students, and students need to respect the teachers. Once that mutual respect is formed, misbehaviors will be decreased, and the learning can begin with more engagement and less distractions. As said by Nelson, Lott, and Glenn (2000), having a mutual respect in the classroom not only fosters a positive environment, but it also develops life skills. The central outcome that I want to foster in my students is a growth mindset. A growth mindset allows students to look at themselves and their abilities as constantly growing and improving and that they can achieve their goals if they put in the work. One aspect of that is being comfortable with challenging themselves and making mistakes. I will do this by creating a humanistic learning environment where the students feel safe, respected as individuals and even encouraged to make those mistakes as they are learning opportunities. Another aspect is the continuous building of skills and knowledge. Which can be fostered by using the instructional strategy of scaffolding.
