As a learner, the most salient dimensions of learning for me is are the evolution of knowledge and technology, not to be afraid to ask questions and be open to different views. One of the most positive outcomes is a commitment to “radical openness,” the will to explore different perspectives and change one’s mind as new information is presented (hooks, 2003, p. 48). Understanding that there are always more sides to a story just like there can be many solutions to a problem is key to better prepare these students. Entering graduate school and then becoming a teacher, it will be important for me to maintain this openness for each student. To know that each student is different and have a classroom full of them, will be a process to maintain such openness. As a teacher, I must be able to provide a support to encourage and challenge their minds so they can better understand the older they get. Individually each student will face different kinds of challenges and as the teacher it is also important for me to manage patience. As a teacher, I want my students to know that they can agree and disagree with things that do not feel right within them; that stands for opinions or views in the classroom and personal life situations. Wayne Au did exactly this by using the film Barefoot Gen. He says, “I want my students to understand that as thinking human beings, we have the right to disagree and protest when a government’s actions are not in the interests of humanity” (114). This is rarely taught at home, but this is going to help the student think for themselves, in school and outside of it. This is going to help them gain self-awareness, develop their own solutions, shape important decisions, and hopefully have a better sense of good
