From an academic aspect, I believe a teacher that shows interest in their students’ academic success by creating engaging and creative lessons, and accepts their student’s opinions will have the most success in making their students feel valued.
Listing the skills and attributes of an outstanding teacher is a stupendous task, due to the fact that the list is very long. What I believe in and practice; from my experiences; professional development programs that I attended, and my own success stories; is building and maintaining positive and professional relationships with my students and parents as the most important attribute that a teacher should possess. Moreover, the impact of these meaningful relationships both on students’ academic and social development are vital to our setting. I believe that educating is a responsibility to the passionate, individual, and scholastic needs of students. Educators must enjoy and make the most of their work. Teaching can be challenging because the job expands outside of the classroom and most of the time the work comes home with you. For example, there are always papers to grade and lesson plans to prepare. The most influential people in my life are my children. I’ve always strived to be someone that they can be proud of and teaching is a very admiral profession.
Reflecting on my educational and practical experiences, I appreciate the infinite influence that teachers have on children. I realise that children will take the skills and knowledge learnt in the classroom and use it throughout their lives. I know a teacher has to deal with many daily pressures and challenges, in the classroom. However, I feel I require the skills needed to deal with these challenges. As a teacher I hope not only to be an educator but a positive role model, whom the children can look up to and trust.
When I was asked to teach elementary school children, I wasn’t sure how should I deliver all the materials to them. Recalling my childhood, my early education was dull and discouraging. There is endless lecturing about hardcore science mechanisms without hands-on experiences. As time passed, I accepted the hidden curriculum in lecture halls: accept all the information given, there’s no need for passion (“Session 10 – School Food Systems: Hidden Curriculum | LFS 250,” n.d.). I appreciate that I am given a second chance to become a member in an elementary school, to teach kids about vermicomposting, and to experience different teaching and learning approaches, which regained my passion for pursuing new knowledge.
Three very important components of my educator’s DNA are love for what I do and those I serve, a compassionate approach that reaches and heart and the mind, and a relentless pursuit of excellence in everything I do. Specifically, to this position, I bring practical classroom management knowledge, a proven ability to maintain an organized and efficient learning environment, and experience in how to create effective rapport with students to help them achieve the learning goals of the class.
The best teachers are always learning. Learning from each other and learning from their students. By returning to school and earning my master’s degree, I grew academically. I learned to organize my thoughts in a more coherent way. I learned to read critically.
