A Summary of Gerald Graff’s “Hidden Intellectualism” Gerald Graff’s “Hidden Intellectualism” goes through many reasons why not being book smart could be a good thing. The sports world is a way of people connecting through the competitive sports that always lead to some sort of debate (268). Graff grew up always liking sports and being “street smart” living in Chicago. He always read sports magazines growing up and realized that reading magazines was a good tactic for schools to teach street smart kids how to write good essays based on their hobbies of reading magazines (265). “What doesn’t occur to us, is that schools and colleges might be at fault for missing the opportunity to tap into such street smarts and channel them into good academic work”(264).
The novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley suggests themes and allusions towards Marxism. This is seen as the citizens of Ford’s society are reliant on a system of social hierarchies in a negative perspective. It is also evident with the ongoing concept idea of societal value over the individual citizen. Additionally, Huxley reflects Marx’s belief that society would become dystopian if similar conditions like in Brave New World would be established.
A large group of students in the United States makeup a large population of English language learners. Students who are considered English language learners undergo many challenges in their education, and without the necessary support and resources from their educators it can make it hard for them to succeed. A teacher plays a significant role in the success of a child, and it is crucial for them to be able to provide the proper education to students whose first language is not English. It is also very important for teachers to understand the challenges that these students are facing. Having empathy towards the students allows for the teacher to create better connections and relationships to better help them.
The purpose for students to go through so many stages to reach their goal of becoming a teacher is to make them more informed and experienced about their career. The professional dispositions allow the students to know how to behave professionally, be ethically professional towards their students as well as colleagues, personally develop their skills as a preservice candidate, and successfully go through the all the stages to become a teacher. In my experiences from K-12, I have never considered a teacher to be unprofessional to my peers or myself. A teacher who comes to school dressed accordingly for work is considered professional.
I am currently teaching at Swainston Middle School in North Las Vegas. Our student population is very diverse, including English Language Learners (ELLs). During this time as a teacher, I have served students with different language needs. It has been my goal to engage ELL students in my lessons as every other student. It is my opinion that as teachers we are all language teachers.
What do you currently teach and where? I am a December graduate of the University of Charleston. I graduated magna cum laude. After graduation I began substituting. I substituted at a variety of schools in Kanawha County in a variety of grades.
As a future teacher looking toward a time when I will be responsible for a classroom of my own, the prospects are terrifying. Students arrive in the classroom with various strengths and weaknesses with the expectation that I can and will teach them the given curriculum. Admittedly, some students will be easier to connect with and teach than others. This is not the fault of the students, but rather the fault of the teacher. However, this is not to say that the teacher should be held entirely responsible for the challenges that he/she may face and fail; but the teacher can surely be held responsible for coming to an expected challenge and failing due to lack of preparation or effort.
Bryce Williams EDUC 250 Jan. 29th, 2017 When I become a teacher, I find it that it is very beneficial to meet the needs of all of your students, While in a classroom I believe that I must always be willing to adapt to any of my students while making sure that I am doing the best that I possibly can to educate them. We as educators owe it to our students to help them keep learning and growing in order to offer many ways that they can be success. It is a personal feeling of mine to always want to see my students be the best that can be, Urie Bronfenbrenner states "Every child needs at least one adult who is irrationally crazy about him or her." I believe that each and every child is unique in their own way. Who needs a secure and caring environment in which they can grow and mature emotionally, cognitively, physically, and socially. That’s why for me it’s important to help the students meet their full potential in this areas by providing an environment that is safe and also a place where they are able to share their ideas with each other and to let them explore their curiosity because after all that’s how they learn. As a teacher I feel that we should motivate our students to become the best that they can be by incorporating in our curriculum the many theories that we have learn in this class so that we can help them achieve their full potential. Growing up, I always knew I wanted to become a teacher. I knew it would be challenging, but rewarding with many benefits to come. But no one ever told me it can result in me getting sued. I graduated from Rutgers University in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and I was on my way to finishing up my teaching certification. The following school year I was set to start student teaching, but everything changed when the Superintendent of my old Middle School offered me position teaching math.
Reflecting on my preceding experiences in education, I acknowledge the immense impact that teachers cause on the lives of their students. I recognize that the knowledge and skills collected in the classroom, will be utilized by students throughout life. As a teacher, I aspire to be a role model that resonates with young people. My goal is to maintain an open mind, the ability and knowledge to view the world critically, and the confidence in my capacity to make positive contributions to our society. Bearing this goal in mind, I am applying for admission into the Graduate School of Education in Elementary and Special Education program.
In order for me as a teacher to know the needs of each and every learner in my class I need to fully engage all of them in my learning processes. Most of all I need to have open ears to hear out my learners grievances or issues that they are concerned about. Each and every learner in my class should be my first priority. I will always make sure that I recruit their interests in everything that I do or say in their class presence. In order for me to make them more interested in my teaching skills I will connect what am teaching with the happenings of real life to grab their interest.
It’s another day of sitting through seven periods. Seven hours. Seven classes. You find yourself in a hard desk daydreaming about your future. You think to yourself, “how is chemistry going to help me with my future in graphic designing.”
1. I want to become a teacher because I wish my teaching with my students to learn about special education in schools. The school is getting a good education about students with teacher need to teach a focus on development. Behind every teacher is an inspirational background story that has formed the basis of their career choice. My story evolved during my freshman year of high school. Throughout my schooling, I struggled at finding my niche and place of belonging. Thankfully, this personal hardship abruptly ended upon my enrollment in a Family and Consumer Sciences course. That class, along with FCCLA, paved the foundation for my future and provided me with direction.
